Raising Aspirations in Bolsover – September 2010
As part of the Raising Aspirations project commissioned by Bolsover Local Strategic Partnership, Chesterfield College is offering residents in the district a FREE personal development course to encourage positive progression in to employment, volunteering or further training.

The course is available to those over the age of 19, living in the Bolsover district that are currently claiming benefits and out of work. The course is completely free with travel and childcare costs covered for the duration of the programme.

During the course, individuals work with tutors to build a portfolio of employability evidence including CV’s and personal statements as well as taking part in a work placement scheme. The course will also give individuals access to specialist advice and guidance on areas such as debt, housing, healthy eating and benefits. Upon completion of the City and Guilds course, participants are awarded a certificate demonstrating their development and employability along with a £25 gift voucher.

Emily Williams, Raising Aspirations Project Manager, explains, “The course is an ideal gateway for Bolsover district residents who may be out of work and claiming benefits, and who have the drive to get back into working in the community but don’t necessarily know how to, without their benefits being affected.”

To find out more contact Emily Williams on 01246 520259. Emily will be happy to provide advice to anyone who is interested in the programme.

I am descended from Robert Coup born 1682 at Pinxton. He lived at Pinxton or in surrounding areas. My family also involves Hogkinson ancestors. Generations after Robert apparently resided at Hill Top Farm.

Do I currently have any relatives in Pinxton or is someone aware of my family's history? Does Hill Top farm still exist and would someone be kind enough to photograph it for me?

Thanks in anticipation of help.

Subject: Logs - by: 1adminadvicE

As the UK's leading Log Suppliers (http://www.logs2u.co.uk/logs-supplier) we get lots of questions from our customers each day about buying logs online.

One question which is very common is, how heavy is your Bag of Logs? or what does a bag of logs weigh?

This question is usually posed because customers are trying to find Cheap Logs (http://www.logs2u.co.uk/cheap-logs-and-wood-fuels-price-reductions) to buy and have seen logs for sale (http://www.logs2u.co.uk/logs-for-sale) on other log suppliers web sites and the logs or firewood is sold by weight.

Here is our best advice for you.

Log Buying Step 1- Make sure you are buying and comparing like for like.

Kiln Dried Logs (http://www.logs2u.co.uk/category/buy-logs-online/kiln-dried-logs) are not the same as Seasoned Logs (http://www.logs2u.co.uk/category/buy-logs-online/seasoned-logs) and both seasoned and kiln dried logs are not the same as Unseasoned Logs (http://www.logs2u.co.uk/category/buy-logs-online/self-season-logs) or green wood. When you see an advert for logs or firewood make sure that the company selling the product states whether they are seasoned, unseasoned or kiln dried logs. It would be easy to see a bulk bag or two of logs at a price which appears to be half the price of another sellers product - and that can easily be the case - for example, If you were to compare a dumpy bag of kiln dried logs to a similiar bag of unseasoned logs.

Log Buying Step 2- Don't get drawn into trying to work out weight comparisons. Under UK Law, (The weights and measures act) companies are not allowed to sell logs by weight. The reason is to protect you the consumer and this is to do with the moisture content of logs. If you are looking for a good deal don't order by weight.

Any business who has published logs for sale by weight has not met the requirements of UK law and therefore there may be other significant things in their service delivery that they also get wrong - for instance, do they label their products as seasoned, unseasoned or Kiln dried? If they don't, you may be paying out your hard earned cash on a bag of water! Logs can contain over 60% water! To elaborate the point to the extreme - If you really want water, you can get it free from your tap or if you really wish to pay for it you can buy it from a supermarket in plastic bottles! If you want value for money buy logs which are very low in moisture content.

Log Buying Step 3- Don't get confused with terminology. Softwood logs are different from hardwood logs and a hardwood log does not mean it is seasoned either - to make things simpler here is a simple list of unique products - each one is different. To understand more about this use one of the links listed at the end of this article.

Kiln Dried Logs can be either...
Kiln Dried Softwood Logs
Kiln Dried Hardwood Logs

Seasoned Logs can be either...
Seasoned Hardwood Logs
Seasoned Softwood Logs

Unseasoned Logs (sometimes named as green logs or green wood) can be either...
Unseasoned Hardwood Logs
Unseasoned Softwood Logs
All unseasoned logs need to be first seasoned in a log store (http://www.logs2u.co.uk/category/buy-logs-online/log-stores) or similiar dry, airy location.

Fire Logs (http://www.logs2u.co.uk/category/buy-logs-online/fire-logs) or Heat Logs usually mean a manufactured log made from waste wood products.

Generally speaking, most people prefer hardwood logs (http://www.logs2u.co.uk) as they burn slower and hotter than softwood logs. Softwood logs are great on milder days.
